Ratan Naval Tata is an Indian industrialist, investor, philanthropist and former chairman of Tata Sons. He was born on 28 December 1937.

Early Life:

Ratan Tata is the son of Naval Tata, who had been adopted from J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage by Navajbai Tata.

Education:

He did his initial schooling in Mumbai and Shimla, at the Cathedral and John Connon School and Bishop Cotton School (Shimla).

Later, he received a B. Arch. degree in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962, and the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in 1975.

Career:

1) In 1962, after graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Architecture and Structural EngineeringRatan joined the family business.

2) Even though Ratan Tata had an wonderful job offer from IBM, he turned down the job following the advice of J.R.D. Tata and entered the family business.

3) In 1962, Ratan joined the Tata Group and he was sent to Jamshedpur to work at Tata Steel. He worked on the floor along with other blue-collar employees shoveling limestone and handling the blast furnaces. It was a difficult job where he gained an insight about his family business.

4) In 1991, J.R.D Tata stepped down as chairman of Tata Sons and named his nephew Ratan as next successor of the Tata Group.

5) Initially, Ratan Tata faced stiff resistance from many company heads some of whom had spent decades in their respective companies and rose to become very powerful and influential. However, Ratan began replacing them by setting a retirement age, and then made individual companies report operationally to the group office.

6) Under Ratan Tata's leadership, the organisation achieved new heights and generated large amount of overseas revenues. He was instrumental in the acquisition of Tetley, Jaguar, Land Rover and Corus which turned Tata from a major India-Centric company to a global conglomerate.

7) In 2008, Tata Motors purchase of the elite British car brands Jaguar and Land Rover from the Ford Motor Company. The $2.3 billion deal marked the largest-ever acquisition by an Indian automotive firm.

8) Ratan as the Chairman of Tata Group was able to achieve international recognition and prestige for his company. The astounding financial success of the company brought the Tata Group to the New York Stock Exchange.

9) In 2000, the Tata Group acquired London-based Tetley Tea for $431.3 million.

10) And in 2004, Tata Group purchased the truck-manufacturing operations of South Korea’s Daewoo Motors for $102 million.

11) In 2007, Tata Steel completed the biggest corporate takeover by an Indian company when it
acquired the giant Anglo-Dutch steel manufacturer Corus Group for $11.3 billion.

12) Tata Group is a privately owned conglomerate of nearly 100 companies encompassing diverse business sectors like chemicals, consumer products, energy, engineering, information systems, materials, and services. It is Headquarters in Mumbai.

Philanthropy:

He is a strong believer of giving wealth back to the society, Ratan Tata claims that about 60-65% of the wealth that he has created from his companies goes back to people in the form of education, medicine and rural development, making him one of the biggest philanthropic endeavour person.

He is the recipient of two of the highest civilian awards of India: Padma Vibhushan (2008) and Padma Bhushan (2000).
