Inspiring Life Journey of StarBucks CEO Howard Schultz !

Howard Schultz is an American business magnate and writer. He was born to a Jewish family on July 19, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. He is famously known as the founder of StarBucks.

1) As Schultz's family was poor, he saw an escape in sports such as baseball, football, and basketball.

2) Since Howard Schultz was a very good sports person, he was awarded an athletic scholarship to the Northern Michigan University where he studied communications.

3) After graduating from university, Howard Schultz worked as a salesman for Xerox Corporation and was quickly promoted to a full sales representative. Here he worked for 4 years.

4) In 1979, Howard became a general manager for Swedish drip coffee maker manufacturer, Hammarplast. He had to visit a coffee bean shop named StarBucks Coffee Company based in Seattle for Hammarplast.

5) He was very inspired by their dedication and recognized its potential business opportunity.

6) A year later, he joined them as Director of Marketing. During his visit to Milan, Italy for StarBucks, Schultz noted that coffee bars existed on practically every street.

7) He learned that they not only served excellent Espresso, they also served as meeting places or public squares for relaxation.

8) On his return, he tried to persuade the owners of the StarBucks to offer traditional espresso beverages in addition to the whole bean coffee, leaf teas and spices they had long offered. However, this idea was turned by StarBucks management.

9) Frustrated Schultz decided to leave StarBucks in 1985.

10) So in 1985, he opened his own coffee shop which he called ‘il Giornale’.

11) Soon this business became successful and after two years Schultz purchased StarBucks for $3.8 million.

12) Later he renamed his own shop as ‘StarBucks’ and started aggressive expansion all over the country.

13) Unlike many other major companies Howard did not want to sell its franchises, instead decided to keep the possession of every outlet.

14) Schultz has been considered as a very generous employer and some of his best practices in work really helped to increase the loyalty of his employees. And even Howard wanted his employees to work 20 hours a week and get complete Health Coverage and a Stock-Option plan.

15) He has got a lot of awards for his achievements. Howard received the International Distinguished Entrepreneur Award for his remarkable success and admirable conduct of StarBucks from the University of Manitoba.

Schultz is happily married to Sheri Kersch, they have two children.
